Pay Dashboard - A part of Experian Pay Dashboard

You may not be actively looking to change the software used in your business, but as BHP Chartered Accountants found, exploring other software options is really important, especially when you are reviewing a solution that is client-facing.

BHP were using the default epayslip solution from their payroll software provider as the method for their payroll bureau to deliver online payslips to clients. They were not actively looking to change this setup or to move to a new provider. However when Lynne Ashmore, BHP's Head of Payroll, saw a presentation from PayDashboard she was intrigued by this service and the added benefits that it would provide.

That was three years ago, and today PayDashboard is the default online payslip solution for BHP's payroll service.

The C Word

Change.

It's easy to reject changing something in your business, particularly if there are no critical problems with your current solution. It's natural to feel attached to current business processes and reject changes to these.

But often we can let our aversion to change overrule our logical analysis of a situation. Clearly there was an underlying issue with BHP's previous epayslip solution because when they put clients onto PayDashboard, BHP noticed a reduction in queries from clients and more positive feedback as a result. The underlying issues may not have been so pressing as to be business critical and cause BHP to actively seek out other options, but equally when a new option was presented to them it became clear that there was a better way of doing things, and the team embraced the change rather than rejecting it.

Our natural aversion to change needs to be balanced against an open mind to explore other possible options that could bring additional benefits. No-one is going to force you to change to a new system or software just because you asked for a bit more information about their product - the final choice to change is down to you.
